Lost Art Salon offers the ability to see an artist’s work as it progresses over time.

Gertrude Stein popped into my head as soon as I set foot on the layered Oriental carpets covering the floors of San Francisco’s Lost Art Salon.

Stein, remembered almost as much for her Paris literary salon and her collection of paintings by Matisse, Picasso, Cezanne and other giants of modern art as for her own avant-garde writing, would be at home holding forth in the light streaming through the industrial windows of Lost Art’s main gallery.

Like Stein’s Paris townhouse, Lost Art Salon is a space to contemplate (mostly) mid-century art and artists. The walls of the long, narrow room are hung, floor to high ceiling, with paintings that compete and collude in a riot of artistic styles. Owners Gaétan Caron and Rob Delamater are the welcoming hosts to this gallery featuring accomplished American artists whose works reflect the major movements and styles of the Modern era.

The gallery owners spent time with me as freely as if I were Bill Gates on a shopping spree.
